Team Vitality’s luck in the Legends Stage of the PGL Major in Antwerp has run out. The French team have been sent home from the competition after a tough series against Heroic.
Both teams came into the last day of the Legends Stage 2-2, with the win-and-in situation beckoning.
They both knew that nothing short of a win was going to be enough. The winner was going through to the Champions bracket that starts on Thursday. The loser was going home.
It looked like the pressure was getting the better of Vitality in the first map of the series.
Heroic raced out to a 13-2 lead at the swap on Mirage. Even with a small comeback from Vitality after the break, their opponents saw out map one 16-7.
Overpass was much tighter. Both sides traded blows throughout.
Heroic led by a single round at half but Vitality managed to string together six of the first seven rounds after the break to take the map and force the series to map three.
Inferno was up for the final and deciding map.
Once again Heroic raced out to an early lead that was too much for Vitality to cope with despite nearly coming back into the contest.
They were 14-5 down at one point, after losing the first four rounds after changing sides.
The French team then won seven rounds on the bounce to seemingly make the map competitive once more but it wasn’t to be for them.
The win sends Heroic through to the quarter-finals of the Major, starting on Thursday (May 19).
Vitality’s run comes to an end
Vitality have ridden their luck a bit in the Legends Stage of the Major. At one point, the team had a 0-2 record.
That meant they needed to win three best of threes in a row in order to qualify for the bracket stage of the tournament.
They really struggled against Ninjas in Pyjamas and Outsiders, who both took best of ones against Vitality.
Then, with their backs against the wall, the team started to turn up.
Liquid were the first on the docket. They came into the match on the back of eliminating Astralis in the final match of the Challengers Stage of the tournament.
Vitality managed to make quick work of them. Winning in two straight maps.
Their second series of “win or go home” was less simple. They had to battle it out with BIG in three overtime periods in order to earn the right to face Heroic.
Unfortunately for the former World #1, they’ll now go home, placing 9-16th in Antwerp.
There are two more matches today in the final round of the Legends Stage of the Major.
G2 vs FURIA (14:50 BST)
Copenhagen Flames vs Imperial (18:30 BST)
Both matches can be seen on YouTube or Twitch.
